this is one of my favorite pieces from you genuinely.
one facet of the "mirror" i think about a lot is translation. i have so much affection for those who choose to do translation as a major, a career, a life's dedication.
i think about how much effort and intention are involved because you are picking apart meaning and language and trying to choose something that comes close to delivering the same message.
i think of how we translate in our everyday lives and fraction every single interaction or conversation we have when we relay it to someone else and lose the essence of the original while someone else gains the spirit of their new original.
i want to eat this piece; i want to eat you (complimentary).
love this, love you. beautiful, evocative beginning to my morning.
Your comment reminded me of those YouTube videos where they'd take a song and put it through ten layers of google translate and then try to re-sing it and none of the lyrics would make sense and only a fragment of the original remained... and I think that's proof of how much work has to go into translation and even then I can't help but think abt all the tiny little things that get lost. I give you full permission to eat 🧘♀️ love u sm <3
this whole piece is incredible. i’ve read and reread the second portion for longer than i’d care to admit now. raises a lot of questions i’ll be pondering for a while: is an essay the sum of its words or is it something else entirely? can it still be called the same essay when every word is transformed or translated? is an idea an entity that words attempt to describe, or is it the words themselves? is an adult the child? is the child its mother? is the mother the adult, or is she the adults that came before her? crazy good work.
thank you thank you thank you i cannot tell you how much i appreciate your comment bc these are the types of comments i live for and im so so happy to know that what ive written was able to bring out all these questions. tysm for reading <3
This piece is an absolute favorite. There is so much to dissect with your words and I am so in awe with how you structured this so perfectly! The fluidity of your writing, the way each section stands strong on its own but still weaves in so beautifully to the next. The imagery that you used!! Ahhh, I am obsessed!
“The child is dead but the mother’s womb remains. The mother’s womb is dead but the child stays proof of the mother’s name. The village says mother but the word is different than how the mother says mother. How can a word be the same but mean something else?” wenyi, i am completely floored!!! your writing is honestly something else
my goat can never disappoint, this was just as lovely. halfthrough this piece i was reminded of Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil. you are always just so amazing, i love how my works are heavily inspired by your ideas and how you influence others too. thank you for writing, thank you for sharing
I understood maybe half of what I was reading but I felt it. I believe that's what matter the most
Honestly that might be the best compliment <3 I want every person to take away something a little different and also the same
